Botox Q & A

What is Botox®?

Botox is a cosmetic injectable formulated to reduce the appearance of wrinkles, fine lines, and crow’s feet. When it enters your body, Botox blocks nerve signals from reaching the muscles in your face. That process lets your muscles relax, making your skin appear smoother and more aesthetically pleasing.

Aside from its cosmetic benefits, Botox can help relieve temporomandibular joint disorders (TMJ). Botox helps the muscles in your jaw and neck relax, reducing the risk of teeth grinding,  headaches, and chronic facial pain.

How do you prepare for Botox?

Before recommending Botox, your Dentistry of Kingwood provider asks about your goals and reviews your medical history. Let them know about any allergies and if you take any prescription medication, vitamins, or supplements regularly.

On the day of your appointment, don’t wear any makeup. Your provider might also recommend avoiding blood-thinning medications, like aspirin, to reduce the risk of bruising.

What does a Botox appointment involve?

If the team at Dentistry of Kingwood determines you qualify for Botox, they apply a topical anesthetic to numb the treatment area.

Then, your provider administers a series of 3-5 injections into the area between your eyebrows and the skin around the sides of your eyes. The process is pain-free and typically takes 10 minutes or less.

Is Botox safe?

Botox is safe and usually well-tolerated. Following your appointment, it’s normal to experience some mild bruising and discomfort, but these symptoms should resolve within a few days. Other mild side effects of Botox include:

  • Headache
  • Dry eyes
  • Swelling of the eyelids
  • Double vision

If you’re allergic to Botox, you might also experience a rash or itchy skin.

What can I expect after Botox treatment?

After you receive Botox injections, avoid rubbing, massaging, or scratching the treated areas. These actions can cause the Botox to spread into other parts of your body and negatively affect your results.

If you receive Botox injections between your eyes, avoid laying down for at least three hours. Aside from that, you can return to work and other normal activities.

How long does Botox last?

Botox typically lasts 3-4 months, but everyone responds differently to treatment. Visiting the team at Dentistry of Kingwood every few months for a follow-up appointment can keep your skin looking young and healthy for years to come.
